This article aims to address the fundamental differences between passion and love from psychological, neuroscientific, and sociocultural perspectives, contributing to the scientific understanding of human affective bonds. The investigation is based on well-established theoretical models in international literature, including the Triangular Theory of Love proposed by Robert Sternberg, the Attachment Theory developed by John Bowlby and expanded by Mary Ainsworth, as well as contemporary contributions from affective neuroscience and clinical psychology. The study analyzes emotional, cognitive, and behavioral characteristics associated with passion and love, highlighting aspects such as emotional intensity, idealization, relational stability, and the gradual construction of emotional bonds.
Additionally, this article examines the neurobiological mechanisms involved in these phenomena, emphasizing the role of the brain reward system, dopamine, and oxytocin in the formation and maintenance of affective relationships. Sociocultural factors influencing the social construction of love and contemporary expectations regarding romantic relationships are also discussed, demonstrating the influence of cultural and historical norms on human emotional experiences. In the clinical field, the study presents relevant therapeutic implications, including the identification of emotional dependency, treatment of dysfunctional relationships, and the development of emotional education strategies aimed at promoting healthy interpersonal bonds.
Finally, this work proposes an integrated analysis of passion and love, emphasizing that while passion represents an intense and often temporary emotional state, love is characterized as a continuous process sustained by trust, mutual respect, and emotional commitment. Therefore, distinguishing between these phenomena significantly contributes to mental health promotion, prevention of toxic relationships, and strengthening of interpersonal connections, offering theoretical and practical support for psychologists, educators, and researchers interested in understanding human relationships.
